Persephone Cider
A gentle twist on an herbal classic, this is my toned-down, slightly less spicy version of fire cider. Classic fire cider is made with hot peppers, and while this cider contains horseradish root, onion, garlic, and ginger to give it the sinus-opening, circulation-increasing boost we need from fire cider, it also contains lots of sweeter inclusions. Elderberries, tangerines, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, star anise, and the ingredient that gives it its name- pomegranates!
In the Persephone myth, the young woman’s fateful consumption of six pomegranate seeds ensures that she must return to the underworld for 6 months of the year, bringing winter to the world. Pomegranates are rich with symbolic imagery, but they are also rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, and immune-boosting power. I thought it was fitting to call upon this magical fruit who is so tied to the imagery of winter to help us get through the winter months, when our immune systems are struggling due to the reduction of Vitamin D present in the shorter days and weaker sunlight. I also thought that calling upon Persephone would remind us that we, too, will survive our annual stint in the underworld of Winter, and that spring will return once more.
This slightly less spicy tonic is a great option for those of us with more sensitive stomachs, or less adventurous palates! A small swig (have a water chaser ready!) will effectively open your sinuses. You can call upon this medicine daily to prevent illness, or save it to get you through the inevitable winter congestion. You can also include it in your cooking! It is a lovely addition to marinades and salad dressings. Keep refrigerated to extend shelf life up to a year, or drink it right up. No preservatives, only fresh and organic ingredients.
4 oz glass bottle.
